Active Lighthouse

Currently an active U.S. Coast Guard Lighthouse with the original 4th order Fresnel Lens, Brown Head is now available to rent for those seeking solitude and rejuvenation on Maine’s largest island community.


A seasonal two bedroom keepers’ house located on 12 acres of land, with a full spectrum view of the Fox Islands Thoroughfare.


The lighthouse has been completely renovated, creating a historic and one of a kind retreat.

Accommodations

With spectacular water views from almost every window and close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, you will enjoy watching marine wildlife, ships, lobster boats, and an occasional schooner, from the lighthouse during your stay.

Getting to Vinalhaven is part of the adventure and honestly, it sets the tone for your entire stay. Be prepared to have your car in line 1-2 hours prior to departure, then sit back, and enjoy the scenic ride across Penobscot Bay as the mainland fades and island life begins to take over. Accessibility Note

Accessibility is part of what makes this stay so memorable and it’s worth noting up front so you can plan accordingly. After parking in the designated area above the lighthouse, guests will make their way down a long exterior stairway that leads to the deck and front entrance. The walk down is scenic and rewarding, with beautiful views along the way, but the number of steps is significant and may not be suitable for those with mobility challenges or difficulty navigating stairs. Many guests find it to be part of the unique charm of staying in such a special, historic setting, just something to be prepared for before you arrive.
